- The 1861 census shows Joseph living in Islington, London, with his wife and children - William, Frances, Herbert and Louis. Also there are two of Josephs sisters, both unmarried, Mary Ann Spencer age 28 and Margaret Spencer age 27, they are shown as visitors. Note, the name Margaret is unclear and I may have misinterpreted the name. There are, in addition, three servants at the premises.
The 1871 census shows Joseph as "Bachelor of Arts, Professor of Mathematics University Lond"
age 47 and born in London, Middlesex.
He is living at 123, Short Heath Road, Erdington, Birminham. With his wife and two children William (16) and Charles (2). They have a domestic servant,
